I. List of Secondary teacher duties:

  1. Complete all grading, create progress reports and conduct parent conferences in a timely manner;
  2. Support the instructional program with asynchronous web conferencing sessions and synchronous instruction;
  3. Review curriculum and devise alternate approaches to presenting lessons to increase student understanding (working directly with students and parents);
  4. Communicate with parents, students and other teachers on a regular basis to develop and update Personal Learning Plans and schedules, score assessments, provide feedback on student work, suggest instructional approaches and strategies, monitor completion of assignments and coach special projects;
  5. Work collaboratively with other teachers to ensure that all students are successfully progressing through the program, that parents have a central point of contact, and that tasks are distributed among the teachers;
  6. Develop a general knowledge of the entire program's K-12 curriculum and a very detailed knowledge of the courses for which responsible;
  7. Support students and parents with alternate strategies and provide additional assistance with daily assignments and projects;
  8. Communicate regularly with parents, students, and curriculum specialists through use of computer and telephone;
  9. Keep student records and data up-to-date, including cumulative files, online student and family information, attendance accounting, and logging all student and parent contacts;
  10. Consult with other teachers and staff learning specialists to develop alternate enrichment activities and modifications to students' programs to increase student understanding;
  11. Work with other teachers to coordinate social activities and relevant field trips for students;
  12. Manage regional field trips and make efforts to integrate trips into the curriculum;
  13. Devise and implement virtual methods of creating and maintaining a “school community”;
  14. Participate in the organization and administration of the State Testing, as directed;
  15. Participate in student recruiting sessions and other marketing efforts that require teacher representation;
  16. Work with Advisory Teachers and School counselor to ensure students and families are receiving appropriate communications, students are making adequate progress and established goals are being met;
  17. Attend field trips and other community activities implemented for families;

II. List of Secondary teacher qualifications

  1. Highly qualified and certified to teach English 6-12 in South Carolina (appropriate to grade level responsibilities).
  2. Strong technology skills (especially with Microsoft OS and MS Office programs).
  3. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  4. Customer focused approach.
  5. High degree of flexibility.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work well in fast paced environment.
  7. Team player track record.
  8. Willingness to travel on occasion for marketing and state testing events (may require occasional overnight travel).
  9. Ability to work remotely, if necessary.
  10. Ability to work some occasional evening hours, as needed to support some families.

III. Tips to write job description

1. Too-long job description:

Looking at a too-long job description can frighten the candidates off and drive the away. A job description, no matter how important the job is, should not be included in more than 3 pages. If one focuses on too many things at a time, he shall definitely lose focus on the main items and get overwhelmed by the remaining; So, keep it concisely.

2. Too-short job description:

While too-long can be a problem, too-short is more a problem. It will ruin the meaning of the job description. A too-short one means it lacks necessary details and therefore, the candidate will not be able to understand while reading it.

3. Listing unnecessary functions or job duties:

Just classifying these into the “others” category will save you a lot of effort and space. On the other hand, the job description will become more dilute and easy to be neglected.

4. Key functions

Not listing key functions as required for the job can be a fatal mistake to a job description.

5. Grammar and spelling

Poor grammar and having spelling errors can ruin the job description, too. Never think that as you are the employer, you may have the right to make grammar or spelling errors while requires other not to. A job description with such errors is easily to be mistaken as a fake or ghost ads; as a result, the candidate will turn away from it.

6. Not specific enough:

Be specific and concise; if you don’t address the specific, then what the job description is for. It is for the candidate to understand just exactly what he needs to do or needs to have. Lacking details can confuse the candidates very well.

7. Not having the job description reviewed by others:

This is also a common mistake. One may be subject to bias, but more than one, especially with the help of those external advisor, the job description can be more perfect.

8. Using buzzwords or abbreviations:

In fact, it is not necessary at all to use such in a job description.

9. Using slang or legal words:

Just use common wording to communicate with others and don’t do anything extraordinarily.

10. Not updating the job description:

The same job may require different duties and responsibilities in different times, so, you cannot use the same job description for 2 different times.
